OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwire-October 23, 2010)-Canada will extend its measures for refugees from Iraq for at least two additional years, citizenship, immigration and multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney announced today. Following announcement today, Canada will be an extra 8,600 refugees resettle.
In 2009, in response to conditions in Iraq and requests by the United Nations High Commissioner for refugees, Canada has more than doubled the number of resettlement of refugees who would welcome through its mission in Damascus, where to apply more Iraqi refugees.Canada committed approximately 2,500 refugees a year under its private sponsorship program between 2009 and 2011 resettling. in 2010, Canada has also increased the number of refugees from Damascus intends to resettle through the United Nations as refugees assisted by Government, 1400 to 1800 per year.

As part of the balancing refugee Reform Act, which was converted into law earlier this summer, the Government of Canada will increase the number of resettlement of refugees received each year by 20 percent.This includes 2000 more spots in private sponsorship of refugees program and more than 500 refugees assisted Government.This means that Canada will welcome as many as 14,500 refugees a year through its resettlement.
