The specialist: subdomains, subdirectories and SEO implications

"Ask an expert" is an occasional feature of which we ask ecommerce experts questions to online merchants. For this installment, we face a series of questions about proper use of subdomains.

For answers, we turn to Michael Stearns, CEO of Internet marketing and design company HEROweb and a collaborator of circulation of electronic commerce.

If you have a question you'd like to submit, email Kate Monteith, staff writer, kate@practicalecommerce.com and we will try to resolve it.

Michael Stearns "A subdomain is a specific name that defines THE DNS settings for the root domain. a subdomain can be an effective device to extend your brand and distribution of additional content and technologies for the top-level Web site. Here is a sample: http://members.joespopshop.com subdomain.

«In this example: "com" is the top-level domain;» joespopshop ' is the second-level domain;' Member ' is the subdomain. For this discussion, we will use the generic term ' root ' to describe the site address of joespopshop.com.

"The key alternative to a subdomain, when deploying and integrating other Web content, is a subdirectory. A subdirectory would simply by clicking a directory below the root of the site. an example is: http://www.joespopshop.com/members.

"Beyond sub-domains, you can always set additional top-level domains and websites to distribute content niche."

"If you have technical know-how to adjust your DNS records, and Web server configuration, I recommend using subdomains to key content that users would view as clearly distinct from the root domain. you must change the configuration of DNS server and the Web so that Web users are directed to the correct pages correctly. For example, if you make these changes, typing "http://members.joespopshop.com" would send the user "http://www.joespopshop.com" and not the actual subdomain site.

"Good candidates for subdomains would be a blog, a site of documentation and support, a site only to members or a webmail system.I will say that putting a blog on a subdomain instead of in a subdirectory is a much discussed topic from a search engine perspective.

"If you have content that is clearly part of the parent message and the functionality of your website, put in a subdirectory."

"Google has changed as regards subdomains. Google now sees the subdomain, as part of the root domain and not as a separate entity, which means that the implications of SEO where you put the contents are not as crucial as the quality of the content itself.

"There is a key issue as Google assigns an authority site and if moving the contents of a subdomain will dilute the authority of the top-level site or give you a strong overall level of authority. This topic is discussed in the circles may keep SEO. Subdomains some authorities link, but you want to be informed about the construction of a strong link between the forest root domain and subdomain and put some good content on the site.

"If the SEO is the key factor, there is probably an advantage for the creation of a root domain with a lot of content. Thus, if you do not have any content to talk over your products, putting your blog in a subdirectory, would be a good idea (and make sure you have strong automaticamnte to the rest of your site). If you already have a lot of content on your site and you want to define a different tone, watch and a message with your blog, a separate domain or subdomain would make sense.

"Note that you will do more harm than good, to create a subdomain with the same contents as the main domain, and Google specifically warns against this in its webmaster guidelines.Google engineers (and Bing) are smart and smarter. ultimately if you put the precious, unique content on the Web that is Concept, you'll be rewarded. "

"If you need to use SSL for content that is going in particular for subdomains, and then we wait for you at an additional cost, and subdomains might not be the best choice for you. an SSL certificate is bound to a specific domain name, FQDN. So if you want to use https://members.joespopshop.com, you need a separate certificate (or wildcard certificate) for that subdomain. the cheapest would use subdirectory off of your root domain".

"In General, there is a positive aspect of branding to using subdomains. just like a .com domain has a pull the strongest and most memorable of other top-level domains, multiple sub-domains of deployment you can create a big impact for your business and clearly the segment of different parts of the operation.

"You can combine subdomains with Redirect to set clear and consistent of addresses for the users, like:

Facebook. joespopshop. comtwitter. comyelp. joespopshop.com joespopshop.

"You can also use subdomains as concise for print advertising URLS that are easy to track down your analytics program."

"If you don't have any idea how to configure your Web server and the DNS records, probably will do well to stick with subfolders and you'll be on solid ground from an SEO etc…but if you have the option to configure DNS and site redirects, you get more control over content and messaging in certain situations with the use of subdomains. Also will be able to develop some implementations advanced techniques which have an address that is related to your main domain, but technically they can be completely separated."
