The Girl Scouts from Troop 7775 received a surprise when they arrived at a news conference at the Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas headquarters Friday afternoon. They had been chosen from thousands of troops to appear on special cookie boxes that celebrate the organization's 100th anniversary and the 2012 national marketing campaign.

Mayor Julián Castro and State Sen. Leticia Van de Putte helped unveil photographs of the Scouts at Market Square and Mission San José on 5-foot replicas of new Savannah Smiles Lemon Cookie boxes.

Last year's regional top cookie seller, Hannah Richmond, introduced the mayor, who congratulated the girls on behalf of the City Council and “1.3 million very proud San Antonians.”

“When we look at you, we see the possibilities,” Castro said. “We see the future; we see everything that all of us are working for.”

Van de Putte, a former Girl Scout, said all six women in the Texas Senate were Girl Scouts.

“We take great pride in knowing that when they roll out the cookie campaign, that it'll be our girls that will be highlighted,” Van de Putte said. “You are the future; your future is very bright.”

Jackie Gorman-Johnson, chairwoman of the Scouts' Southwest Texas board of directors, said the cookie program is the largest girl-led business in the country, generating $700 million in communities nationwide. “All around us, as we look at the women leaders of San Antonio, you can see products of our Girl Scout entrepreneurs,” she said. Denise Mitchell, senior director of marketing for Little Brownie Bakers, said her team visited councils around the country to find inspiring stories.

“Your council of girls is going to be national stars beyond San Antonio,” Mitchell said. “When you enjoy your box of Samoas and Thin Mints, know that you're also enjoying the growth of your community.”

Mitchell challenged her team to find stories that showed girls making sustainable changes in the lives of their communities. She said they found Girl Scouts in San Antonio that used their cookie money to fund a robotics camp for disadvantaged children and build a playroom for children at Haven for Hope. She said they found a CEO who cared for her Scouts as if they were her own girls and volunteers who improved the lives of all the girls in the council.

Mitchell said the Southwest council was chosen from 112 councils for serving as a national model for expanding the impact of Girl Scouts in San Antonio and the surrounding area. Another factor was their pace as the fastest-growing council in the nation, with a 32 percent increase in membership in recent months.

Anna Maria Chávez, CEO of the Girls Scouts of Southwest Texas council, said the council was able to do community projects that allow the girls to say, ‘I can do this.'”

“It's hard to put into words,” Chavez said. “It's an accumulation of work that's been done by volunteers, the girls and donors. We could never have this success for the girls without community support.”

After the unveiling, Victoria Moreno, 8; Arianna Moreno, 5; Ruby Gradillas, 9; and Deseri Ruiz, 9, clambered up on the podium to get a closer look at their faces on the boxes.

Troop leaders Lisa Delgado and Ana Villa laughed as Arianna mugged for the cameras. Delgado was elated that her girls were chosen.

“I'm very proud of my girls,” she said.

The four girls surrounded her, buzzing about the revelation. “I'm very excited and really grateful,” Ruby said. “I feel like I'm going to be very famous and people are going to wonder, ‘Wasn't that the little girl on the box?'”
