While working on my feature on mobile commerce a few months ago, analysts, retailers and consumers also seemed to agree that the smartphone has the potential to replace the traditional portfolio. This surprised me. Maybe I am a person suspicious, but I still can't bring myself to make a purchase on my Blackberry. I just started to feel comfortable (slightly) shopping online, and maintain all copies of my receipts for at least a year. However, apparently I'm behind on my time.
This week, Mashable reported a recent study by Ogilvy & Mather. After asking the United States 500 Internet users that they trust with mobile payments, Visa and Mastercard to top colon with 39.6% to 35.8%, respectively. Facebook was the loser. Despite its growing popularity, consumers are difficult to trust the social networking site for their habits of retail therapy.
Despite my conservative virtual shopping habits, I'm curious to see the results of a few years down the road. My prediction? It won't be long until Facebook is an important commercial port.
But I will remain a mall rat for life.
