US States Ban mercury in button batteries

US States of Connecticut, Maine and Rhode Island have banned the use of mercury in button batteries. These bans are different scopes and effective dates.

State Connecticut1 amended the legislation on the prohibition of the use of mercury in button batteries. The prohibition shall enter into force on July 1, 2011. This law exempts (1) a battery containing mercury and used exclusively in a medical device for delivering insulin automatically to a person until January 1, 2015; and (2) the content of mercury in Silver Oxide batteries until July 1, 2012.button cell batteries

State of Maine2, effective from 1 January 2012, banned the use of mercury in certain types of batteries: button (1) zinc air button cell
battery; (2) a battery of alkaline manganese button cells; and (3) battery silver oxide button stamped with the designation 357, 364, 371, 377, 395, SR44W, SR621SW, SR626SW, SR920SW or SR 927sw silver. In addition, from January 2, 2015, cannot be used in button batteries mercury silver oxide.

The State of Rhode Island3 prohibited the sale or distribution for promotional purposes of mercury batteries added consumer products that contain mercury added button battery. However, the use of mercury in batteries-silver oxide button is permitted until January 1, 2012. Highlights of the three u.s. State regulations are summarized in table 1.
